maker:giver:witness
I often refer to my art-practice as the manipulation of a mound of dug-up dirt beside a hole, along with dreams and longings and bird’s-eye-views. The heart-felt and intuitive process involved in this body of work, uses the language of abstract landscapes.
Each painting is created through an extended period of layering and contemplation. The stages of labour, and intimacy of each piece once resolved, speaks as a collection of visual journal entries - allowing me to physically, emotionally and spiritually communicate as a maker, giver and witness in a hurting world.
Using paint and ink, palette knives, pens and brushes, I partake in earnest archaeological digs of the heart, and of life - where internal and external realities combine. All are part of the enquiry; gestural marks and colour choices speak, and each layer is a part of a greater personal story - some works requiring several years to complete.
Examples of this can be seen in “Beyond (Nothing’s Wasted)” 2022-2023 which is a visceral response to wounded overwhelm and tenderly hummed hope and “Getting There” 2023-2024 depicts a relationship in the desert of loss and uncertainty, intersected by a lifeline of the extraordinary.
