Michelle Gindy (Sundström)

Michelle is a multi-disciplinary artist, using various art forms to expand and deepen parts of the whole.

“I love the cross-talk between abstract painting, writing, music, and film-making, and see my use of these mediums as interweaved digging, releasing & storytelling.”

In her visual art, colours and textures, gestural marks, and spatial relationships, are all part of an intuitive response to prior observation, research & reflection on the human experience - at a micro and macro level. Her creative process is experimental, as she often finds what her subconscious and spirit have to say far more interesting.

In recent years, Michelle has been developing her art practice within the creative community of the Inner West of Sydney. She worked in the artist's co-op Monster Mouse Studios, in Marrickville, and participated in group exhibitions there in 2023/2024. Michelle currently creates in a studio in Summer Hill, where she also facilitates small community gatherings and intuitive-art sessions.

Completing a Bachelor of Arts, at the University of Sydney in 1999, she enjoyed philosophy studies and majored in Art History & Theory and Performance Studies. Within her Visual Arts studies, Michelle was most drawn to painting, mixed media (including found objects, photography & monoprinting), film, digital art and web design (embedding film & music within that),. Beyond her foundational studies in Performance, Michelle completed with distinction a pre-honours thesis in proxemics & rehearsal studies. She also acquired a Master of Teaching at the University of Sydney 2001, specialising in Secondary Education: Art & Drama, studied Ceramics in Singapore in 2002, and more recently completed her Therapeutic Arts Practitioner Certificate in 2025..

“What I express in my paintings - the colours & textures, the gestural marks, the spatial relationships - are all part of an intuitive response to prior observation, research & reflection on the human experience, at a micro and macro level.”

“The type of art I’m drawn to making is often the manipulation of a mound of dug-up dirt beside a hole, along with dreams and longings and bird’s-eye-views. When the process is experimental and undefined, I appreciate the outcome more - I often find what my subconscious and spirit have to say far more interesting.”
